Adopt a Club

Hear how we help young people through football to believe in the future, get good habits and learn to do their best to succeed - i.e. by understanding the importance of education, strong character and work.

'Adopt a Club' is the name of a new development project in Ndola, Zambia. In Adopt a Club, we adopt existing local "football projects" so that they can undergo a comprehensive development phase with the aim of becoming a well functioning football club. This proces takes 1 ½ years.

At the moment, we have carefully selected four of these football projects as focus for our work in 2012. All of them are located in some of the poorest areas of Ndola. Out of the total of the 200 involved young boys and girls, more than half have lost either one or both parents and several don’t have the possibility to go to school.

Why Adopt a Club?

The idea behind Adopt a Club is to create a secure foundation for vulnerable young people. A safe haven from the usual hard and tough everyday life - a place where there is space to dream and where dreams can become a reality. In Zambia you will not find any organized football clubs for young people. There is rarely anything to do in their spare time, so many are being led into drug and substance abuse, infection of HIV/AIDS, crime etc, which as a result leads to talents going to waste. Disappointments and failures are a part of a young Zambian’s daily life.

With Adopt a Club we provide a break for these young people - a place of belonging, where unity and solidarity is formed and a place where they get challenged. Football is a tool - a powerful tool - that reaches far and gets a good grip of the lives of the vulnerable young people. Adopt a Club is about creating role models amongst these young people, who with a strong character can positively affect their environment and fellow human beings in the community.

The Adopt a Club football goes hand in hand with education and character building.  Each individual football project in the Adopt a Club, with the support of Dream Factory, will select five volunteers who are trained as future leaders through our 'Life Coach' and 'Game Coach' education.

After 1 ½ years, our goal is that each project meet the following goals:
  • An independent, organized and efficiently running football club
  • 5 volunteers trained as key staff and leaders
  • 50 young role models trained
  • Possibly discovering the next Ronaldo?
