The importance of the rainforest

By Agnethe Dalby

Agnethe Dalby - importance of the rainforestThe tropical rainforest is the greatest biological treasure on Earth. Around half of the planet's animal and plant species are estimated to live here.

The loss of the rainforests has a profound and devastating impact on our world, as they are so biologically diverse. In the Amazon rainforest alone there are more than 2.000 species of butterflies.
You can find a greater variety of fish in one single pond in Brazil than is found in all of Europe's rivers. Think about it!

The trees of the forest remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in their roots, leaves, branches and stems.

These forests provide sources for 1/4 of our medicines today - it might have cures for tomorrow's diseases too.

The rainforest is very important to the Earth's ecosystem as it recycles and cleans water. One fifth of the world's freshwater supply is in the Amazon rainforest.
