Syria 1937

In his eternal search for the head of John the Baptist Lord Boynton finds an ancient chamber with an inscription telling the story about a man who meets Death in a tavern in Damascus. “This can’t be!” says the man, “my time hasn’t come yet!” and he flees terrified out in the desert. He stops at a well in Samarra and there he meets Death again. The man says: ”This can’t be, I just escaped you in Damascus!”  And Death says: ”Yes, I too was surprised to meet you there, it was always to be that I should meet you here…”

Moral being according to Poirot: You can’t escape your rightful destiny. And also according to Poirot the wealthy Lady Boynton can’t escape her rightful destiny, either, she is bound to have her Appointment with Death in the desert, too. She is an evil and dominating woman who holds her adopted children in a tight rein. It is almost impossible to find any good in her, nevertheless Lord Boynton claims he loved his wife when he at one point becomes a suspect to her murder. But did he actually kill her? Or was it his son, Leonard, who wouldn’t mind giving her a bucket filled with strychnine… or was it her three traumatized children who couldn’t stand her sadistic behavior towards them anymore… Poirot once again has to use his little grey cells while uncovering the dark story of child abuse, a cover-up and revenge.
