David Suchet

Schyyy…

- don’t tell anyone… but you can watch the whole TV film Maxwell, in which Suchet plays the charismatic media mogul Robert Maxwell, here for free. The role gave Suchet a well deserved International Emmy Award 2008 for best actor (and perhaps his longest run ever to a podium...)

With thanks to Isabelle in France!

Finally some news about the upcoming Poirot episodes...

The first out of four episodes will be The Clocks, currently filmed in London and Dover with Charles Palmer directing. Stewart Harcourt has adapted the story for TV and Suchet is associated producer of the show.

It's about a middle-aged man found stabbed to death in a room with four clocks frozen at the time of 13 minutes past four.

Suchet, as usual, will star in the lead role as Hercule Poirot. Also starring are Jaime Winstone as Sheila Webb, Tom Burke as Lt Race and Anna Massey as Miss Pebmarsh. Others mentioned are Phil Daniels as Inspector Hardcastle, Lesley Sharp as ?, Geoffrey Palmer as ? and Beatie Edney as ?.

Suchet says: "After 21 years filming Poirot I am as excited as ever to be returning to the role and very much looking forward to filming with such a wonderful guest cast."

I don’t know why they talk about '21 years of playing Poirot' (Suchet himself says '21 years of filming' ) in stead of 20, unless they include the year the actual shootings took place of the first episode Suchet ever made, The Adventure of the Clapham Cook, which was in 1988 (broadcast 1989).

Suchet on board the Orient Express for an ITV1 documentary

Yes, I know... my heart made a jump, too, when reading the first couple of words in the newspaper headline, thinking this was the one we've been waiting to hear news about, but alas, no, it's not the 'real' one. But almost as good, though...

ITV1 has commissioned a documentary about the ‘Orient Express’s history from 1883 through both World Wars and asked none other than Suchet to be our tour guide. When the famous train leaves Victoria Station in London, heading for Venice and Prague, Suchet will be on board “giving viewers an insight into a unique experience and revealing some of the tales and secrets from its past”.

What a nice opportunity for Suchet to get acquainted with the train, no? Or does he already know the ‘environment’... one wonders...

The documentary will come as a one-hour program called David Suchet on the Orient Express and is supposed to air next year.

David Suchet was among the presenters at The Classical Brit Awards 2009

held in Royal Albert Hall in London four days ago, 14 May.

The annual awards celebrate the outstanding achievement within the - mainly British - classical music world, and Suchet was handing out the award for Composer of the Year to Howard Goodall. A Lifetime Achievement Award was handed out to the world known Spanish tenor Jose Carreras by two other world known opera singers, Dame Kiri Ti Kanawa and Plácido Domingo.

The show airs on ITV1 Tuesday 19 May 10:35pm (1h 15min) with a repeat on ITV3 Sunday 24 May 7:30pm

There’s a couple of pics of Suchet on WireImage and REX  - and more images from the event on This is London - as well as a ‘fashion talk’ on Daily Mail

Furthermore - a nice interview with Suchet on You Tube from the evening (thanks Diana and Pascale!)

Thought you would like to see these...

Diana just sent me two video clips with unseen footage from Suchet’s episode of the BBC genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are in which celebrities search for their ancestors.

Opens in Real Player
Suchet visits the cemetery where his great grandfather Jacob – perhaps - was buried. The cemetery keeps no records and is almost destroyed, only a few half broken gravestones are left - so no one knows for sure whether Jacob was actually buried there.

Suchet gets very surprised when he discovers that the photography studio where his great grandfather worked in Paris, is now the site of the famous Maxim's restaurant.

And then I just read on the Imdb message-board that Cat Among the Pigeons and Mrs. McGinty's Dead airs in the US on PBS respectively 21 and 28 June. You better check the dates on PBS since I haven't checked up on this information.

Change of Suchet's contact address...

Apparently Suchet's agency has moved...

The new address is:

David Suchet

c/o Ken McReddie Associates Ltd.

11 Connaught Place
London W2 2ET
UK

Don't worry if you've already sent something to the old address; if the agency moved recently it probably either has an agreement with the local post-office or the new residents of forwarding mails to the new address. Or your mail will be returned to sender. You then have to send it again to this address. Sorry about that, I just found out myself ten minutes ago by checking up on McReddie's website on an impulse.

Another thing I just found out; the James Joyce Ulysses drama documentary mentioned on the 30th is only available for purchase in the US and Canada and not to home video customers.

Birthday Reminder...

Sorry I’m late with this, I’m a bit tied up for the moment - but: The – almost - never aging Suchet will be 63 on May 2. Hard to believe, isn’t it... he looks as vital and sound as ever, so it seems in the latest BBC interviews. If you wish to send a - belated, I'm afraid - Birthday card you can use this address:

David Suchet

c/o Ken McReddie Associates Ltd.

36-40 Glasshouse Street

London W1B 5DL

UK

- or, since we’re running late, you can place your greeting in the Guestbook, who knows, Suchet might pop in and read it.

Now we’re talking about happy occasions... I’ve been thinking on how to celebrate Suchet’s 20 years of Poirot...

One way to do it could be by making a Memory Lane page... another way could be by making a page/pages with contributions from Suchet’s fans - for the latter I need as many as possible of you out there to send me your material.

Anything will do – it could be your favourite Poirot quotes (from the TV episodes, not the novels), your thoughts, greetings, montages or whatever comes to mind that you would like to express - and I will try (notice the word ‘try’...) to make something out of it and put it up in here eventually, maybe even send a copy of it all to Suchet as a greeting from all of us, his fans. It would be awesome if you would take part in this and I’m sure Suchet would just love it! But it will only come true if you send me your contributions.

I will take the liberty of selecting and picking out, resize, edit etc. in order to make it fit the space and possibilities in here, and I will also take the liberty of cancelling the project if I only get few responses (in that case I might choose to display any montages you might send me, as separate projects). I would also like to know your name and which country you’re from to put under your material, merely so Suchet can see where you’re all from and who made it.

If you would like to join, send your contribution via my e-mail xanadou [blanc] gmail.com – replace [blanc] with @

I promised to let you folks in the US know if I got further informations on the new Poirot DVD release in your area -  and according to Amazon it will be released 7 July with two of the latest episodes,  Mrs. McGinty’s Dead and Cat Among The Pigeons. It comes with a bonus, the 2006 documentary Super Sleuths, which I believe never has been released or aired before other places than in the UK - but now the US also gets the chance to watch it. As for the rest of the world? - don't cry, thanks to Diana I have a copy of the broadcast and plan to show it in parts in here eventually.

I’ve been asked about the little silver vase Poirot/Suchet wears as a brooch on his lapel, the one he got from Virginie Mesnard in the TV episode The Chocolate Box. The flowers in the vase change colour from time to time... now the question is, are the flowers real or artificial and are they interchange-able with the brooch? -Well, that’s actually something I would like to know, too. I’ve seen those kind of vases with real holes in them but I've also seen some without, so does Poirot’s (Suchet’s) vase come with a real one? If you know the answer to these questions pls throw me an E-mail in the Message box

The fan page david-suchet live journal has uploaded some great close-ups from the disaster movie Flood in which Suchet plays Deputy Prime Minister of the UK

Diana  has send me a link to loads of thumbnails with Suchet, thanks!

- and some videos from Pascale, merci!

South Bank Show Awards earlier this year - Suchet signing autographs

Leopold captured in a private moment - another amusing clip from the TV drama documentary James Joyce Ulysses in which Suchet plays Leopold Bloom. I previous said Ulysses was from 1993; that is not correct, it’s from 1987/88 and is part of a series called Ten Great Writers.  You can get it on Films for the Humanities and Sciences for the spicy price of $99.99

Suchet appeared in the BBC2 music radio program, Steve Wright in the Afternoon, yesterday. The program features classic pop & rock music mixed with celebs-chats and the latest news.

You'll love it! The main chat subject with Suchet is Poirot, there is a lot of fun and laughter, and veeeery interesting issues are being revealed. No news on whether any of the new episodes are in the shooting-process, though.

BBC2 iPlayer – pick the 17 April - available online until Friday 24 April
- Suchet 'starts' at around 01:36:00 and 'ends' at around 01:50:00

NB! You can buy the Poirot Collection All 7 Series they mention in the program here  Features all episodes ever made with Suchet, from his first The Adventure of the Clapham Cook in 1989 to his latest Appointment with Death in 2008.

A couple of other news:

Rumour has it that two of the latest four Poirot episodes will be released on DVD in June in US. I'll give you further details when/if I get to know more.

I've added a new great montage made by Pascale, on the Poirot site

Notice that the middle section on the front page of the website is now and then updated separately - that is merely because I need more space for updates than the upper right box gives me. This way it looks nicer and the links to the videos can stay longer.

With thanks to Diana and Pascale for their ongoing contributions and support
