Suchet and Sid Field...

Suchet must be thrilled these days; he’s going to present a documentary for BBC4 on one of his favourite British comedians of the Forties, the music hall performer Sid Field. The working title of the programme is “Suchet’s Music Hall Hero” and it will air in UK later this year.

Sid Field was a pioneer of sketch and camp comedy and became an overnight star on the West End theatres after decades of touring provincial venues.

Not much is recorded of his work but there's a couple of clips on You Tube. He also made three films but the film media wasn’t his strong point; his talent and acts worked best in front of a life audience. Sid Field didn’t have an easy life; to overcome his stage-fright he got addicted to alcohol at a very young age, and he died of a heart attack at the age of 46.

Suchet is already familiar with the life and acts of Sid; he portrayed him on stage in the musical What a Performance in 1994 (and had to learn singing and dancing for the role as well as comic timing on stage). The production was well received in Surrey and Plymouth where it first opened. Much to Suchet's disappointment, though, it didn’t work well in the West End where it only ran for about a month on Queens Theatre.

David Suchet Fangroup on Facebook...

Long time ago somebody suggested that I created a forum for a fan group connected to the fansite... I wasn’t sure then whether there would actually be a need for a place like that and I’m still not sure. It could be fun, though, to get ‘in touch’ with fans in another way than it has been possible in here up till now...

So, I tried to make a news-blog on the fansite where people could write comments... it turned out to be too complicated to use and didn’t work very well with the rest of the site.

Instead, and as kind of a test, I’ve created a Facebook page for fans of Suchet. It’s called David Suchet Fangroup. It’s not a replacement for the news on the fansite, it’s more intended as kind of a supplement, for brief messages that I might or might not put up on this website eventually - but it’s especially meant to be an informal place to meet other fans and perhaps start a dialogue.

In there you can put up comments on news or anything else from in here, as well as share thoughts, links, ideas, reviews, suggestions or whatever comes to mind on Suchet related things. You’re also welcome to put up Suchet-things for sale/exchange etc. or ask questions – I might not be the one who will answer them but when we’re hopefully enough people in the group, I’m sure someone will always try to help.

If you’re already on Facebook just search for David Suchet Fangroup. If not, you have to make an account first; Facebook will tell you how to do that. Or you can try this link to the group (I’ve been told it doesn’t work, though).

You don't have to join the Facebook group to stay updated on the news, though. Anything important will still be put in here in details.

A personal message…

It has been quite a while since last update, hasn’t it... that’s partly because there hasn’t been that much to tell, partly because I’ve been quite ill, and still is. I don’t wish to scare or upset you, and it might not even be something serious in the long run or even ever-lasting, but since beginning of February I’ve been almost incapable of functioning normally.

I have now been on a chemo break for almost a year, it has taken a very long time to gain strength after a very, very tough treatment. The cancer has slowed down and apparently sleeps for now. That’s good – what’s not so good is that I apparently has either gotten serious long-time side effects from the chemo, or something else is very wrong. I can’t eat normally, something is blocking the way, and I have very strange symptoms in my eyes, veins and on my heart, among other things.

I’m of course undergoing some examinations right now but it takes time - in the meanwhile you have to bear with me in here, because whatever is wrong, it goes on my brain, too, and most of the time I don’t get any sleep. I find it very hard to concentrate, think or make coherent text, so I fear it will show in my writing one way or the other. If it does, just bear with me, now you know why ;-) I'm grateful that I'm not a perfomer on stage having to remember lines, I would forget every single word, I would get sacked immediately! Or at least they would have to give me an ear-piece like in Complicit... sorry, Mr. Dreyfuss ;-)

I do have clear moments and better hours, and those moments I will still spend with – among other important things - updating and making this site. It’s my ‘baby’ and it’s the last thing I will let go of J - but slips of news and strange sentences might occur from time to time. That’s also why I decided to create the Facebook page, to use on days where it’s easier for me just to put up a ‘quick link’ or comment in there instead of a more energy-stealing research and resumé with pictures and everything in here ;-)

But pls don’t worry too much, as said anything important will still be put in here and my symptoms might hopefully go away, I haven’t given up hope yet. I just wanted to let you know my - and the fan site's - situation right now, in case you had been wondering lately.

Murder on the Orient Express...

Just saw one or two new photos from the train scenes in Murder on the Orient Express on Mihai Arsene's website - here's one of them with cast and crew taking a break, it seems... and here's the rest of the album.

Poirot’s bow tie up for auction...

According to the New Zealand Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Suchet has donated one of his Poirot bow ties to be auctioned in the Association’s annual Bow Tie Campaign which runs during the week of 20-28 February.

The Association provides information and personal support to New Zealanders and their families living with neuromuscular conditions. The Bow Tie symbolises the skills it take to tie a bow; skills people with neuromuscular diseases often lack - and what better way to promote the campaign than with the most famous bow tie in the world!

If you’re interested in bidding you’ll find contact details on the MDA website

Suchet opens Wellington School theatre...

Two weeks ago Suchet officially opened a refurbished performing arts venue at his old school, Wellington, in Somerset. He’s vice-president of the school’s Performing Arts Appeal which aims to raise money to provide top class performing arts facilities for the students as well as the local community.

Suchet went to boarding school elsewhere when he was eight and came to Wellington at age 13 – here he performed his first major role in a school play (as Macbeth) on the encouragement of his English teacher.

Going back as guest of honour Suchet said: “When I came to Wellington I found kindness and warmth for the first time.”

"I don't think I would ever have had the confidence and the chance to branch out into drama. With encouragement and nurture you grow, and that's what this school did for me.

Diverted delayed...

The TV film Diverted had its DVD release January 25 but according to Amazon UK their suppliers haven’t been able to ‘deliver the goods’ in time. Estimated arrival date is now ‘between February 9 and March 17’...  Quite a disappointment... would have been so nice here in the dark, winter-ice-cold January to curl up in the sofa under a blanket with a nice warm cup of tea and a brand-new Suchet film on the DVD player...

NB! Updated 27 January  16:49
Seems Amazon solved their supplier problems, at least the DVD I pre-ordered long time ago is on its way right now according to the store.

Poirot goes to Denmark...

Actually he has been here for years - but according to a reply I got from the Danish Television some weeks ago the brand new episodes shot last year will show up on our TV screens later this year. And that includes the highly anticipated Murder on The Orient Express... yay... No airdates yet, so keep an eye on your local TV-guide.

Some photos...

Pascale found some great photos to share with us from premiere nights of The Last King of Scotland – October 2006, Odeon, London

Sneak peek on Going Postal...

Woe, I think I’m in love… what a wonderfully nasty character he looks, Suchet’s ex-pirate Reacher Gilt in Going Postal, Sky One’s upcoming TV adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novel...

The ruthless Reacher Gilt (Suchet) to the right with - one - evil eye, long hair and a wonderful beard worthy a Pirate(s) of the Caribbean! Charles Dance to the left as Lord Vetinari doesn't look a kind man, either...

Richard Coyle as Moist von Lipwig

The cast

Going Postal airs on TV in UK around Easter 2010 and will hopefully be followed by a DVD release.

With thanks to Diana for drawing my attention to the fact that there is actually photos to be found out there from the film...
